Director of Instructional Support — Early Literacy

This is a full-time position based anywhere in the Southeast United States.  The majority of initial partners for this position will be located in TN and TX, but candidates do not need to live in either state.

What You’ll Do:

We are looking to hire a Director of Instructional Support - Early Literacy to lead the delivery of school system partnerships focused on early literacy improvements. Instruction Partners is expanding our capability to support partners in early literacy in response to the challenges created by the COVID-19 pandemic, and you will be part of a team that is delivering services to improve learning outcomes for students in kindergarten through third grades. You will manage a portfolio of early literacy partnerships and lead the effort to accelerate student learning in early literacy in partnership with schools and systems throughout the country. You will manage a team of early literacy content experts to support the work with teachers and leaders in our partner schools. You have a passion for and expertise in early literacy and the science of reading, a track record of improving student outcomes, particularly for our youngest learners, and an interest in building relationships and influencing practice change with school and system instructional leaders. You will report to the Managing Director of Instructional Support, District Partnerships.


System Support

•Support a portfolio of partner schools and systems to improve instruction in early literacy and support student growth

•Lead system instructional reviews to diagnose needs and work closely with partners to develop actions plans in line with their values and resources to support instructional improvement

•Build relationships with school and system leaders to support implementation of action plans and adjust course where needed

•Serve as the primary point of contact for partners and their questions; Connect partners to resources, information and research from within the network and across the sector to help schools and systems solve targeted instructional challenges


•Manage a team to provide content-specific support to partners

•Manage partner contracts and deliverables to achieve school-level goals based on instruction and student achievement


•Plan cross-system support opportunities targeting common instructional challenges across the partner network, including

•Planning and facilitating classroom visits and meetings for instructional leaders

•Researching and writing case studies of particular examples of instructional improvement

•Identify common instructional challenges across systems and propose, design and execute new services to target common challenges

•Facilitate adult learning experiences for school and system leaders both within and across systems

Candidate Qualifications and Traits:

  • 8+ years of educational experience, and 3+ years of system-level leadership or school leadership (principal equivalent) experience
  • Experience leading instructional improvement for a school, charter system and/or district, with a track record of improving student achievement, particularly for our youngest learners
  • Knowledge of the science of reading and how students learn how to read 
  • Knowledge of school leadership levers, decisions, and change management implications - understand and able to provide recommendations on the full range of decisions that leaders can make at the school level to organize instruction, staff, and student/family engagement
  • Quick ability to understand the assets, needs, and personalities of a school system to help develop plans that work in their context
  • Strong management skills and experience developing team members
  • Demonstrated success coaching school leaders on instructional improvement and practice changes
  • Learner orientation - openness to trying new methods, approaches, and rapid iteration of work
  • Data driven orientation and a commitment to whatever works best rather than attachment to pet theories or particular ideologies
  • Great communication skills verbally and in writing, with an ability to develop rapport and build trust and inspire others to action across a diverse range of audiences
  • Detail orientation, organization, and ability to keep multiple projects moving forward concurrently
  • Able to travel to schools nationally weekly.
  • Travel may include early morning departures and/or overnight stays and is estimated at 50-60%. A flexible schedule Monday through Friday is required. Instruction Partners covers all travel expenses.

Starting salary for this role is $83,900-117,00 and is based on experience and candidate location. Detailed information about the organizational compensation philosophy is available upon application.
